 History of the Winery

Located on a 55 acre parcel of land, amongst the rolling hills of south Langley, British Columbia and just 45 minutes from Vancouver, B.C. Ranked as the third largest estate winery in BC, we are the largest and oldest winery in the Fraser Valley. Our wines have won numerous awards in wine competitions held throughout Canada, the United States and Europe.

The history of Domaine de Chaberton started back in 1975 with Claude and Inge Violet (the founders), who, having sold their winery and vineyard in France, decided to start afresh in the 'New World'. After visiting California, Ontario and the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Claude and Inge purchased the land where the present site of the Domaine de Chaberton and the Bacchus Bistro are located appreciating it's proximity to Vancouver and warmer climate.

After extensive research, the Violets relized that the property boasts a microclimate with weather conditions much like those that are valued in northern France. In the early 1980s, the Violets experimented with numerous grape varietals to see which ones flourished. In the mid 80's, they began planting in earnest. In the first year of production, 1991, Domaine de Chaberton produced 3,000 cases. Today, the winery produces in excess of 50,000 cases a year.

After running the vineyard for over 25 years, the Violets sold Domaine de Chaberton to Anthony Cheng and Eugene Kwan. Anthony is a business executive, residing in Hong Kong. He has had business interests in Vancouver for 20 years. A connoisseur of fine wine, owner Anthony Cheng, is instrumental in overseeing our final product. Eugene is a business executive and lawyer, born in Shanghai, grew up in Vancouver, graduating from UBC. When the winery changed ownership the Canoe Cove line was launched quickly receiving award-winning recognition.
