History (cont) In the early 1980s, the Violets experimented with numerous grape varietals to see which ones produced the best grapes for making wine. In the mid 80’s, they began planting in earnest. Finally, in 1991, Claude and Inge were satisfied with the quality of the grapes that they were growing and established Domaine de Chaberton Estates, which was the name of the winery that they had owned in southern France. In its first year, Domaine de Chaberton produced 3.000 cases. Today, the winery, which is the oldest winery in the Fraser Valley, produces over 40,000 cases a year and is one of the largest Estate Wineries in British Columbia. The Domaine de Chaberton and Canoe Cove wines and the cuisine of the Bacchus Bistro have become internationally recognized. After running the vineyard for over 25 years, the Violets sold Domaine de Chaberton to Anthony Cheng and Eugene Kwan. Anthony is a business executive, residing in Hong Kong. He has had business interests in Vancouver for 20 years. Anthony is a connoisseur of fine wines and is responsible for the finishing of our wines. Eugene is a lawyer and a business executive, was born in Shanghai; grew up in Vancouver and, after graduating from UBC, has practiced law for over 35 years. |
